That line sums up what so many leaders and teams are feeling today.

It’s the manager who asks, “What’s been hard for you lately?” and actually listens.

That’s relational leadership—the ability to hold accountability and empathy in the same space.

You don’t need a cultural overhaul to build belonging. Try these small moves this week:

  • Leave room for breath.
    Start a meeting by asking, “What’s something that’s working, and something that’s wearing you out?”

  • Repair when you miss.
    A simple “That wasn’t how I meant it, can I take another pass?” rebuilds trust faster than any policy.

  • Appreciate the how, not just the what.
    Notice the way someone navigates pressure, not just the outcome. Appreciation deepens connection.

Those moments are where culture actually lives.

The Strong Ground

When people feel they belong, they don’t just protect the work. They grow it.
They take smarter risks. They recover faster. They stay longer.

That’s the strong ground every workplace needs, where accountability and compassion can stand side by side without one canceling out the other.

When people feel safe to be real, they stop performing and start connecting.
